An annual fixture in the Roundhouse jazz series, and also the leader of one of the first groups to perform here in this idiom, Steve returns to do his level best to top last year's performance – which by general agreement was their best yet. With him will be his usual sparring partner, nonagenarian Tim Belford, who as well as tickling the ivories of the Roundhouse piano will no doubt be indulging in his inimitable verbal exchanges with his leader. This combination of musical compatibility and well-matched witticisms is a rare thing, and very much worth experiencing , whether you're hearing the band for the first time or just coming back for more. Musically, Steve is one of the very best saxophone and clarinet players in the UK in his chosen style (30s and 40s swing), and as well as the redoubtable Tim he has recruited the cream of local players. The occupant of the drum chair has yet to be decided, but we can tell you that, replacing Roy Cansdale who has escaped to Gloucestershire, we will hear the excellent Steve Simpson. This Steve is a younger musician based in Ulverston who boasts a beautiful tone on double bass, and fits perfectly into the quartet. Tickets £11.50 Guests £10 Friends.
